The technique used to get this artistic effect on the rims is called Sgraffito. Translated from the Italian, it means, “to scratch”.
A special tool is used to rough up the edges, create texture and a rustic pattern in the clay. Rims of the dinnerware dishes are brushed with brown glaze, adding to the casual rustic look. The irregular brown spatters on the edges give the pieces a camp feel.
